I'm a real fan of IDEO.org. They democratise the human centred design philosophy and extend the practice to non-designers. It's something that makes some designers feel a bit on edge.

At times, I'm asked by fellow practitioners if they should take part of IDEO.org's challenges. And my view is that...

One of my most rewarding experiences as a human centred designer has been to collaborate on IDEO.org’s Amplify Challenge 'How might parents in low-income communities ensure children thrive in their first five years.' As part of the challenge, I was lucky to speak to some wonderful parents in the Sudanese community in the Brimbank area, together with dedicated community specialists and professionals who supported these parents. The project I worked on focused on the application of human design principles - working through the inspiration, ideation and prototyping phases.

For me, while working on this challenge, the power of human centred design came to life. What else became really clear, is that the practice lends itself to all different types of endeavours - whether in a community, social innovation setting (which is where I wish to make the most impact in time....) or one that is more commercial.

So yes, take part in one the many challenges. It's a wonderful learning experience.
